HISTORY, MYTHOLOGY and ANOMALIES
Mankind has been confronted with abrupt climate-changes in the past (and survived).
Many of these changes were caused by massive and destructive volcanic eruptions. Pompeji and Herculaneum or the explosion of Mount St.Helens were just small stuff, compared to the eruption at Lake Toba (Indonesia), Thera in the Mediterranean or Mount Krakatao (Indonesia again). Not only did tsunamis destroy the coast.
Ashes circled the earth, blocked the sun and caused "mini"-ice-ages. The 17th-century Dutch painters excelled in paintings of icy circumstances and ice-skating people.
Something like that happened to the Vikings on Greenland and North-America. Flourishing settlements were abandonned and the settlers returned to Iceland and Norway.
